Addictions are at best, an annoyance. At worst, they end lives, ruin others and change the way we live. Of course, we all associate addictions with alcohol, drugs and smoking, particularly as the effects are so tragic. However, addiction comes in many forms, and most of those forms share the same traits.
The most obvious way of spotting you have an addiction is relying on something too much. If the importance of that task overtakes everything else in your life, you’re likely addicted to it. This isn’t necessarily a horrendous thing if you’re addicted to something like reading books. However, you do need to question what you’re neglecting instead. Are you missing out on time with your family, or ruining your career as a result? Of course, if it’s alcohol or drugs-related, you’ve got a huge problem on your hands.
You also have to think about the other mental aspects of addiction. How do you feel when you do these things? My bet is that you love to do it at the time, but you probably end up regretting it later, right? That’s a common sign of addiction. Also, do you feel nervous, panicky and angry if it is taken away from you? Do you keep thinking about the moment you can finally do it again, without being able to push it out of your mind? Again, this is an almost sure sign that you’ve got an issue to deal with.
So, what can you do? The first step is recognising that you’ve got an issue. Denial is a very common trait of someone who is addicted to something. If you understand there’s a problem and you have the desire to change it, that’s the most powerful step you can make. The ability to change is possible, as long as you actually want to make those changes.
There are all sorts of treatment methods you could undertake, many of which can be read online from Addiction Recovery Centre. There are lots of support services that are dedicated to treating the effects of addictions. As long as you’re willing to work with them and understand that it won’t be easy, they’ll do everything they can to help. You can also find plenty of tip guides on the internet if you need a little motivation from time-to-time.
Don’t underestimate the importance of friends and family during this time as well. If you can admit to them that you’re struggling, they’ll do everything they can to help. Just spending some quality time together can be a massive boost to your overall well-being. If they understand that you’re finding it difficult, they’ll be more likely to understand if you act in an irritable fashion as well.
